The Winner of the 2009 Union Plus Scholarship
AFGE Family Members WinSamantha Brown of Lexington, KY, whose mother Peggy Brown is a member of AFGE Local 2302, has been awarded a $500 scholarship. Samantha was one of 133 students representing 41 unions. Their accomplishments are impressive, their stories are inspiring and their backgrounds are incredibly diverse. However, they all are united by their connection to the union movement. Union Plus Scholarship awards are granted to students attending a two-year college, four-year college, graduate school or a recognized technical or trade school. Since 1992, Union Plus has awarded more than $2.4 million in scholarships to union families. Recipients are selected based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. For more than 10 years, the Union Plus Scholarship program has supported working families pursuing post-secondary education. The Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation. The 2008 Union Plus Scholarship application deadline was January 31, 2008. The 2009 scholarship application will be available in September 2008, at www.afge.org. How the Union Plus Scholarship Program Works In addition to demonstrating academic ability, applicants are required to submit essays of no more than 500 words describing their career goals, detailing their personal relationship with the union movement and explaining why they are deserving of a union scholarship. Individuals must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Starting with 2008, graduate school students also will be eligible for Union Plus Scholarships. There is no requirement to have participated in any Union Plus program in order to qualify.
