AFGE Membership Elects National Secretary-Treasurer

(LAS VEGAS, NEVADA)—In a special election, supervised by the Department of Labor, members of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) have elected Jim Davis to serve as National Secretary-Treasurer of the union. Davis was first elected NST at AFGE’s 35th Triennial Convention in August 2000 in Orlando, Florida.

The special election—held Oct. 13, 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada—was agreed to by AFGE and the Department of Labor in May of this year when it was determined that a machine error occurred while counting the ballots at the union’s 2000 Convention.

The following votes were cast on the first ballot in the Oct. 13, 2001, special election:

Jim Davis: 63,361
Rita Mason: 55,810
David Schlein: 27,255

Because none of the candidates for the office of National Secretary-Treasurer achieved a majority of the votes on the first ballot, as called for in the union’s National Constitution, a runoff election between the two candidates who received the largest number of delegate votes was held. The following votes were cast in the runoff:

Jim Davis: 75,979
Rita Mason: 65,353

Jim Davis will serve as AFGE’s National Secretary-Treasurer until the next election of National Officers is conducted at the union’s regularly scheduled National Convention to be held in August 2003, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, is the largest union for federal workers, representing some 600,000 employees in the United States and overseas as well as employees working for the District of Columbia.
