AFGE Police Officers to Rally on Capitol Hill

Bipartisan Legislation Would Grant Respect

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Members of the American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) Police Officers Steering Committee will join with other federal police officers outside the Capitol to show their support for legislation which would grant “law enforcement officer” status to Immigration and Naturalization inspectors as well as Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Department of Defense and Federal Protective Service police officers. The rally will take place on:

Monday, May 14, 2001
2:30 p.m.
House Triangle—East Front of Capitol

The AFGE-supported bill would reclassify as “law enforcement officers” all federal employees who carry firearms and are responsible for the investigation or apprehension of suspected or convicted criminals.

“Federal employees who daily lay their lives on the line to protect the American people should be treated comparably whether they work for the DVA or the FBI,” said AFGE National President Bobby L. Harnage. “AFGE is grateful to Representative Bob Filner (D-Calif.) for his continued efforts to correct this inequity.”

Like other federal law enforcement officers who can currently retire after 20 years of federal service, this bill—to be introduced on Monday, May 14—would extend the 20-year retirement option to those reclassified as “law enforcement officers.”
