AFGE to Address Homeland Security on Labor Radio Program on July 27
Charles Showalter, president of the National Homeland Security Council, will be a guest on the Cleveland-based labor radio program America’s Work Force on Wednesday, July 27. America’s Work Airs between 7 and 8 EDT a.m. daily on WERE 1300 AM (http://www.awf.cc/). Showalter will discuss how the proposed personnel system for DHS could hinder efforts to keep our nation secure and ways in which AFGE is fighting the proposed changes. Showalter will also address the essential role federal employees play in keeping Americans safe and tenacious lobbying efforts on the part of AFGE to secure the necessary resources for homeland security programs. 7-21-2005

AFGE Wins $20 Million Initial Payment For DHS Employees
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) announced today that it won a $20 million initial payment in its eleven year battle with the agency formerly known as Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) over unpaid overtime for thousands of federal employees. Payments totaling $20 million will be made on or before June 15 by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which absorbed INS when it was created, in compliance with an order to compensate more than 8,600 employees of the former INS who worked overtime but were improperly paid. Border Patrol union decries 'witch hunt'
In a sharply worded attack, the union for 10,000 U.S. Border Patrol employees accused the federal government of conducting a "witch hunt" in an investigation that implicated dozens of Border Patrol agents in a kickback scheme.
