AFGE Leaders to Meet With EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
National and local leaders with the American Federation of Government Employees will meet today with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson to discuss longstanding issues facing civilian employees in the EPA, including the need to reconstitute the National Partnership Council, develop better labor-management relations and reform the process of contracting out Federal jobs. AFGE National President John Gage, National Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox, Council 238 President Charles Orzehoskie and Local 3331 President Nate James, representing EPA headquarters employees, all will attend the meeting.

AFGE Continues to Build Working Relationship with New VA Secretary
AFGE and the AFGE National VA Council, today, met with Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. This marks the first meeting of the VA Secretary with the full National VA Council, which represents 180,000 employees in the VA. AFGE has been supportive of the new VA Secretary, applauding his nomination and swift confirmation. During the meeting, which took place at AFGE National Headquarters, AFGE National VA Council executive board members discussed with Secretary Shinseki the many challenges and opportunities faced by VA employees in fulfilling the department’s mission.

Today, President Obama announced significant reforms in how the government does business by changing contracting methods and standards, including a call for federal employee performance of inherently governmental functions. The American Federation of Government Employees has long insisted that inherently governmental work, and closely related work of a recurring nature, should always be performed by reliable and experienced federal employees who put the public interest first.
