H.R. 1881 (the Lowey Bill) Allows for Bargaining Rights at TSA. Help Us Get This Bill Passed NOW!

Monday November 2, 2009

In April 2008, AFGE was proud to stand in solidarity with Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee Chair Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, as they introduced H.R. 1881, which will help make President Obama’s commitment to grant TSOs collective bargaining rights and workplace protections into reality for the 43,000 men and women who stand on the front lines protecting this nation. AFGE encourages cosponsorship of the bill and stresses the urgency of a swift passage.

Current Status:

H.R. 1881 was marked up and reported out favorably by both the House Homeland Security Committee (7/9/09) and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee (9/10/09). (Scroll to bottom of page for full vote results.)

Next Steps: After a Committee Report is submitted, the bill most probably will be sent to the Rules Committee, which will set the rules (including schedule) for the House to vote on final passage of the bill. When the bill passes the House, it will go to the Senate for consideration. The bill will be referred to one or more Senate committees, and will need to be “reported out” and voted on by the Senate. After Senate passage, the House and Senate will come up with a joint bill for presentation to President Obama. The president then would be expected to sign the bill, making it a law.

AFGE Takes Action!

AFGE was first out of the gate in support of H.R. 1881, and has actively pursued passage of the bill since it was introduced.
