Remarks by 5th District NVP Charlotte Flowers on the passing of AFGE Employee Margaret Smith

August 3, 2009

By Charlotte Flowers
5th District National Vice President

With sadness, death has come among us.  Margaret Smith has silently closed the door of life and departed from us never again to return.  Her death is visibly and profoundly felt by those with whom she had contact with.
Margaret was always so full of life.  She was a wonderful gift to those of us whose life she touched.  Her memory will never be forgotten.

Margaret was not just an AFGE Employee – she was our friend.  We are blessed to have had the privilege of knowing her, working with her, and having someone so giving of herself.  She will be missed.

There is a saying that makes us think of her:  Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.  Margaret learned to dance in the rain, she put up a good fight over the last two and half years and right up to the end.

It is hard to find the words to express our thoughts and feelings when we lose someone so special. Just know that “The Fearless Fifth” lost a member of their family today.  She will be missed, she was loved, but she will not be forgotten.

To her loving family and all who mourn with you, please accept our assurance of heartfelt sympathy.

Margaret was a ray of sunshine, so giving, so happy, so full of life. She was a joy to speak with and always, always, willing to help a fellow union member in any way she could. We were her people. We love you Margaret, and we will miss your smiling face and good nature. God speed, and see you later, Lorraine
