Heroism Lives On

Tuesday November 10, 2009

The heroism and bravery of our country’s service members doesn’t end once they leave the active military. Their service and dedication to their country live on with them to their next chosen paths in life.

Nothing illustrates this more than the men and women that make up our membership. More than 40% of our members are veterans – and our men and women have chosen to continue their path of service to the American public by working for the federal government.

AFGE members continue to put their lives in harm’s way.  They continue to protect and to serve our communities.  They continue to go above and beyond what is required of them on the job.  And they continue to sacrifice for the greater good.

And every once in a great while, our country is reminded – most of the time in shocking and unforgiving ways – of these sacrifices, these acts or heroism from every day people who continue to defy the unwarranted perception of an uncaring and indolent federal work force.

We have countless real life heroes in out ranks. I’m talking about our AFGE sister and Army veteran, Sgt. Kim Munley, who saved countless lives and took three bullets herself by stopping a shooting rampage on Ft. Hood; Navy veteran and correctional officer Jose Rivera, who was murdered in the line of duty by two inmates, a life that might have possibly been spared had he had the proper protection or back up; our VA workers who ensure quality and timely care for our veterans; our Immigration and Customs Enforcement members who protect our security by vigilantly enforcing the nation's immigration and customs laws; our Social Security members who provide Americans unflagging service and guidance to them as they navigate their way through their retirement; our Transportation Security Officers and Border Patrol officers who are on the frontline of homeland security – every AFGE member is a part of something much bigger than just their job.

On this Veteran’s Day, in your next union meeting, at your next day on the job, take a look around at your union brothers and sisters. Chances are you will begin to realize that in this union, we walk among everyday heroes.

Thank you to all of our members for your sacrifice.
