Tune in now to AFGE’s “Inside Government” radio show for a look back at Hurricane Katrina and the work done by federal employees during the crisis. The show, which originally aired on Friday, Aug. 27, is now available on demand.
Former AFGE Federal Emergency Management Agency Local 4060 President Leo Bosner discussed his work during Hurricane Katrina as a FEMA watch officer. Bosner, who developed FEMA’s National Situation Reports prior to the storm, shared his thoughts on FEMA’s lack of preparation and the agency’s struggles under the Department of Homeland Security.
AFGE Federal Law Enforcement Committee Secretary-Treasurer Jim Aldridge then addressed his time in New Orleans after the hurricane hit. Aldridge was a police officer stationed at the New Orleans VA Medical Center, where he helped evacuate staff and secure the hospital. Describing New Orleans as a “war zone,” Aldridge indicated a need for more planning and better coordination between federal agencies to deal with the crisis.
Also on the show, Maryland Citizens Health Initiative President Vincent DeMarco discussed his work to build coalitions around issues such as gun control, health care, and tobacco regulation.
Listen LIVE on Fridays at 10 a.m. on 1500 AM WFED in the D.C. area or online at www.federalnewsradio.com.

Serious staffing and funding shortfalls and an increase in violence at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will be discussed this week on the American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) “Inside Government” radio show. AFGE Council of Prison Locals President Bryan Lowry will address the circumstances around a recent assault at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, which resulted in injuries to four correctional officers and prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to provide assistance outside the facility. Lowry also will discuss the critical staffing and funding shortages at BOP, which he says have left the agency with a 5:1 inmate-to-staff ratio, significantly higher than the 3.7:1 ratio in 1997.
GovLoop Founder and President Steve Ressler then will provide an inside look at the social media platform, which he describes as a cross between Facebook and LinkedIn for government workers. Ressler also will shed light on GovLoop’s charitable causes, his passion for public service, and ideas for making government work better. For more information on how to join GovLoop, please visit www.govloop.com.

Service delivery issues and the significant claims backlog at the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be discussed this week on the American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) “Inside Government” radio show. AFGE National Council of SSA Field Operations Locals President Witold Skwierczynski, who recently testified before the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, will examine SSA’s service delivery problems as well as the significant claims backlog at the agency. Skwierczynski will make the case for increased staffing at SSA and congressional oversight of the agency’s service delivery practices.
AFGE Federal Protective Service (FPS) Local 918 President David Wright then will address the possibility FPS could federalize its 15,000 contract security guards, a move the union supports. Wright also will discuss reports of contractor failings and strategies to reform FPS, which is responsible for securing federal buildings.
Lastly, AFGE Labor Relations Specialist Milly Rodriguez will detail the toxic lead contamination at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters in Washington, D.C. The contamination is believed to be caused by a Secret Service shooting range in the building’s basement. Rodriguez will discuss EPA’s response to the situation, the cleanup process, and protective measures for employees.

Gray also will shed light on reports of a $34 million D.C. Public Schools budget surplus that was discovered only after hundreds of teachers lost their jobs.
AFGE National Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox, 8th District National Vice President Jane Nygaard, and Legislative Representative Marilyn Park then will discuss the fight to obtain equal bargaining rights for all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees. AFGE supports H.R. 949, which would provide full collective bargaining rights for physicians, dentists, registered nurses and other VA health care professionals covered by the Title 38 personnel system. Cox, Nygaard, and Park also will preview National Nurses Week May 6 - 12.

The dire need for reform at the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) is discussed on the American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) “Inside Government” radio show. AFGE D.C. government Local 383 President Johnnie Walker, who has worked with juveniles for more than 30 years, most recently at DYRS, addresses the critical situation at the overcrowded agency. With more than 800 committed youths at DYRS, Walker discusses how overpopulation at the agency can lead to increased violence throughout the city.

AFGE members from around the country then will highlight their most pressing issues, ranging from D.C. government privatization efforts to inadequate staffing throughout the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Guests include AFGE Environmental Protection Agency Local 3607 President Karen Kellen and Legislative Advocate Dave Christensen, Department of Defense Local 2516 Secretary-Treasurer Susie Peru, and Bureau of Prisons Local 1302 Treasurer Mike Schnobrich.

But first, Economic Policy Institute’s Josh Bivens discusses the new health care legislation and its impact on the economy in the years ahead. Bivens also addresses the need to increase job growth before tackling the federal deficit.

The nation’s hardworking and dedicated federal work force is celebrated on AFGE’s “Inside Government” radio program. Partnership for Public Service Vice President John Palguta discussed the valuable work of federal employees and debunked the myth that they are paid significantly more than their private sector counterparts. Palguta also addressed the notion that the federal government is too big and growing out of control.

AFGE Membership and Organization Assistant Director Cathie McQuiston updated listeners on AFGE’s petition for exclusive representation at the Transportation Security Administration. McQuiston detailed the process thus far, and discussed the possibilities of what to expect next.

Lastly, AFGE Local Presidents Kevin Tinker (Local 3377) and Everett Kelley (Local 1945) shed light on their locals’ most pressing issues. Specifically, Tinker addressed the high work load at the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services, while Kelley detailed his fight to have term and temporary employees converted to full-time status. Kelley also appears on the launch of “Inside Government” TV at AFGE’s recent Legislative and Grassroots Mobilization Conference in Washington, D.C. The interview can be found here.

The next steps for Department of Transportation workers who were furloughed are discussed on AFGE's Inside Government. AFGE DOT Local 3313 President Antonyio Johnson will shed light on the furloughs at DOT, which left 2,000 federal workers jobless. Johnson also will address how the union and agency worked together to keep employees informed and find a resolution. Passage of the bill that put the federal workers back on the job occurred earlier this week; however, questions remain going forward.
But first, Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will discuss the final push to pass health care reform. Begich also will recap his first year as a U.S. senator, while Van Hollen will address the need to keep inherently governmental jobs inside the federal government.
Fort Hood heroes and AFGE members Sgts. Kim Munley and Mark Todd then will look back at their courageous actions in taking down the Fort Hood shooter on Nov. 5, 2009. Sgts. Munley and Todd ended the mass shooting, which left 13 dead and 30 wounded.
Lastly, AFGE Defense Conference (DEFCON) Chair Don Hale and Vice Chair Patty Viers will discuss the end of the National Security Personnel System. Hale and Viers also will look ahead to insourcing at the Department of Defense, the next major undertaking for DEFCON.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will appear this week on AFGE's "Inside Government" nationally syndicated radio program to address the need for collective bargaining rights at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The interview, which originally aired last week on "Inside Government," follows a massive TSA rally that took place this week at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C. The rally featured hundreds of Transportation Security Officers, union members, and activists from around the country who came together in support of these critical workplace rights. A recap of the rally with producer Jason Fornicola will soon be available on "Inside Government" TV at www.youtube.com/afgeonline.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), who chairs the Health subcommittee on the House Energy and Commerce committee, will share his thoughts on health care reform as an economic issue and his displeasure with the proposed tax on health care plans.

Common Cause President and CEO and former U.S. Rep. Bob Edgar (D-Pa.) then will analyze the recent Supreme Court decision to lift restrictions on corporate campaign spending, as well as strategies for financial reform.

Lastly, Families USA Executive Director Ron Pollack will address the need to finalize health care reform and describe what a final bill might look like.

The American Federation of Government Employees’ (AFGE) annual Legislative and Grassroots Mobilization Conference will be previewed this week on AFGE’s “Inside Government” nationally syndicated radio program. AFGE Legislative and Political Director Beth Moten will discuss the event, during which thousands of AFGE activists descend on Capitol Hill to meet with their congressional representatives. Moten also will detail AFGE’s reaction to President Obama’s 2011 budget proposal, including the importance of pay parity between civilian federal employees and the military.
But first, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will discuss the need to secure collective bargaining rights for Transportation Security Officers, and what the AFL-CIO has done to support AFGE in this fight.

Lastly, Families USA Executive Director Ron Pollack will address the need to finalize health care reform and describe what a final bill might look like.

Three of Maryland’s most influential Democrats will appear this week on AFGE’s “Inside Government” nationally syndicated radio program. U.S. Representatives John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Donna Edwards (D-Md.), and Maryland Democratic Party Chairwoman Susan Turnbull will discuss the Democratic Party’s biggest priorities and challenges – both in Maryland and nationwide. Sarbanes will discuss the recent Supreme Court decision to lift restrictions on corporate campaign spending, and the fight for health care reform. Edwards then will discuss infrastructure improvements in her district, politicians working together to achieve results, and doing right by the taxpayer. Turnbull will discuss her work moving Maryland’s Democratic Party forward, and how important federal employees are to the state’s success.

Lastly, national Democratic strategist and former Clinton White House staffer Bob Weiner will touch on a range of subjects including health care reform and the recent Massachusetts Senate election.
