To avert a government shutdown on Dec. 11, the House and Senate passed a short-term funding measure known as continuing resolution (CR), extending government funding until Dec. 18.
President Trump signed the CR on Dec. 11, only hours before the previous funding measure expired. Congress has funded the government by a CR since September to give more time to work on the massive omnibus budget bill.
AFGE favors allowing Congress time to work out important details. We are also hopeful that the final bill will include a pay increase for federal workers in 2021.
The Trump administration earlier this year proposed a 1% pay raise for federal workers but later voiced its support for the Senate Republicans’ proposal to freeze federal workers’ pay next year.
AFGE condemned Trump for flip-flopping on his earlier pay raise proposal.
“Federal employees are the backbone of our functioning democracy and they have continued serving the American people with honor and distinction despite facing tremendous challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic,” said AFGE President Everett Kelley.
