It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of AFGE’s long-time union leader, activist, and this year’s Retiree of the Year Donald Fowler.
Joining AFGE in 1983, Donald worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Tacoma, Wash., and had been active in his local, Local 498, where he served in various capacities including local president. As president of AFGE 11th District VA Council 249, Donald’s activism spanned three decades at the local, district, council, and national levels.
His peers and those that worked with him were struck by his commitment to AFGE’s mission, describing him as a dedicated, knowledgeable leader and mentor. He was someone who always showed up when called upon by a coworker, a member, an elected leader, or the National VA Council.
Shortly before he passed away, he attended an NVAC meeting in Washington, D.C. doing what he loved and was surrounded by people who admired him.
His dedication to our union was not limited to the VA – he was a key leader on the TSA campaign helping us fight toward victory at LAX.
Rest in peace, Don. You will be missed.
