In another win for our union members, Des Moines, Iowa will become a new locality in 2020 while Imperial County in California will be added to the Los Angeles locality pay area.
The council voted to create a new locality pay area for Des Moines. According to data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, non-federal workers in Des Moines earned 10 percentage points more than federal employees doing similar jobs over a three-year period.
The council also agreed that Imperial County met the criteria to become an “area of application” for L.A.
The locality pay raise was a recommendation by the Federal Salary Council, on which AFGE President J. David Cox Sr. and Public Policy Director Jacque Simon serve.
The establishment of the new locality and the addition of Imperial County to Los Angeles reflects pay disparities between federal and non-federal sectors in those areas.
