McALLEN - Authorities investigated a suspicious package discovered this morning at McAllen-Miller International Airport.

Airport security personnel detected what appeared to be a grenade inside a bag, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said.

Officers first responded to the scene about 9:15 a.m., McAllen Police Sgt. Joel Morales said.

Local authorities investigated the questionable luggage outside on the airport's tarmac and discovered a "representation of what looked like a grenade mounted on a plaque," Rodriguez said.

"We had a detection, we had a response and the investigation revealed that it wasn't a matter of concern," Rodriguez said.

No flight departures or arrivals were disrupted by the investigation, Rodriguez said.

Further investigation will be conducted by the Transportation Security Administration, which will decide whether the owner of the suspicious baggage could face criminal charges, Rodriguez said.

The novelty grenade was discovered in the checked baggage of a woman set to board a Continental Airlines flight to Houston, said TSA spokeswoman Andrea McCauley.
