Charlotte VIPR Operation Covers Multiple Modes of Transportation

May 28, 2008

As thousands gathered in Uptown Charlotte for NASCAR race week events, TSA conducted a Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) operation to augment normal transportation security operations.

Special teams of transportation security officers, behavior detection officers and transportation security inspectors joined federal air marshals, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers and a TSA-certified canine unit from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in conducting security checks May 22-23 at a number of locations including the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Transit Center (hub of the city's bus and light rail operations) and the nearby Amtrak/Greyhound station.

VIPR teams work with local security and law enforcement officials to supplement existing security resources, provide deterrent presence and detection capabilities, and introduce an element of unpredictability to disrupt potential terrorist planning activities.
