TransportationSecurityAdministrationagentsmanningacheckpointatGate2justbefore6p.m.noticedasuspiciousobjectinabackpackasitpassedthroughanX-raymachine,Sgt.LorenzoDuartesaid.

“Theysay,wow,thatlookslikeaknife,”hesaid.“…Sureenough,theygoaheadandopenitupandfindthatthere’saverylargeknife.”
Approximately10inchesinlength,includingthehandleandblade,thedaggerhadtwosharpenededges,Sgt.Duartesaid,makingitanillegalweaponinCalifornia.
HesaidthefederalsecurityagentsreportedlywatchedNicholasLynnJohnson,19,placethebagontheconveyorbelt.Johnsonalsoallegedlyadmittedtoowningthebagpriortoitscontentsbeingsearched,authoritiessaid.
“WeattemptedtogoaheadandaskJohnsonabouttheknife,buthedidn’twanttotalktous,”Sgt.Duartesaid.
Policebookedthe19-year-oldintojailforallegedpossessionofanillegalweaponinlieuof$20,000bail.Sgt.Duartedidnotknowifchargeshadbeenfiledagainstthesuspect.
