What are your plans for Martin Luther King Jr Day observance on Monday, Jan. 18? Wherever you are, we hope you join your community to celebrate the legacy of our beloved civil rights leader whose contributions changed the entire country for the better.
Here in D.C., we plan on attending the sold out 2016 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference. With more than 1,000 participants registered, this will be one of the largest MLK celebrations and conferences the AFL-CIO has ever hosted.
Don’t fret if you’re not able to join the conference. Follow @AFLCIO on Twitter andInstagram, and use the hashtag #1uMLK to upload stories, experiences and pictures. Don’t forget to text “KING” to 235246 to receive conference updates. If you are using a smart phone, you can save the website to your homepage for easy access to the agenda throughout the conference.
This year’s conference theme is “Change the Rules. Be the Power.” Dr. King was not only a rule breaker but a fierce leader who worked alongside organizers to rewrite antiquated rules to make this country a better place for everyone. Participants are encouraged to speak up and educate each other so that they can go back to their communities and change policies and win campaign. Check out the full agenda here.
There will also be the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade and Peace Walk on Jan. 18.
Don’t keep calm. Celebrate MLK Day! Like Dr. King once said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.” We have a long way to go until there will no longer be attacks on workers, people of color, women, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community. Until then, rewrite the rules and push for a better tomorrow!
