Federal sequestration impacts about 250 Sunny Point civilian employees


Asaresult,theseworkerswillhavetheirpayreducedby20-percentfromnowuntilSeptember,amovetheDepartmentofDefensesaysisinresponsetothebudgetaryshortfallscreatedbythesequester.
MOTSUistheDepartmentofDefense’sonlydeepwatermunitionsportontheEastCoast,andapproximately90-percentofthemunitionsusedintheaterbyU.S.soldiers,sailors,Marines,andairmenareshippedthroughMOTSU.TheworkofthecivilianemployeesonbasekeepsthismatersafelyandsecurelythroughMOTSU.

“ThefurloughisunnecessaryandrepresentsanotherslapinthefaceofthededicatedgovernmentworkersatMOTSU,”saysBillMcGuire,presidentofAmericanFederationofGovernmentEmployeesLocal1708.“Todate,federalemployeeshavesacrificed$90-billiontoathree-yearpayfreezewhilecontributinganother$15-billiontoourretirementandbearingtheburdenofhealthinsurancepremiumandco-payincreases.Thisfurlough,causedbysequestration,merelypilesmoreinsultontoinjury.

“ThisfurloughwillunderminemilitaryreadinesswhilecausingeconomicpainasDODworkersarefurloughedandvacanciesgounfilledduetoaDOD-widehiringfreeze,”McGuirestatedinapressreleaseissuedTuesday.
“StaffingwithintheDepartmentofEmergencyServicesisalreadyatcriticallevels.Furloughingthesefolksisnotconsistentwithmaintainingthesafetyofboththeterminalandnearbycommunities.Youcan’tprovideforfirepreventionandsuppressionwithoutminimumstaffing,”McGuire,aveteranfirefighter,said.

“HowcanDODsecurityofficersandpolicebereasonablyexpectedtomitigatetheriskinvolvedwithpatrolling8,500acresiftheyarefurloughed?MOTSUisthelargestammunitionterminalinthecountry,anditneedstoberuninasafeandsecurefashion.”
