Food Drive to assist furloughed employees on Ft. Bragg

Barner is one of hundreds of Fort Bragg civilian employees who came out to Spring Lake Thursday to accept a helping hand.

"Under this furlough period this summer, they have lost 20 percent of their pay and they are having to really decide whether or not to pay bills, buy clothes for kids going back to school or put groceries on the table,” Jonathan Steele, President of AFGE Local 1770, said.

So, to help with that struggle, the local 1770 of the American Federation of Government Employees hosted a food drive, helping these civilian employees as well as any local residents in need.

"I'm very thankful and I will make sure that I portion it off so that it can last, break the big jars down, put it in the freezer and have some for later,” Barner said.

And Steele said its not just a burden on these folks wallets, this furlough period is affecting the quality of care and service coming out of Fort Bragg.

"We are not being productive and we are not doing what we need to do for the American public," Steele said. "They expect us to do what needs to be done to take care of our military, its not getting done effectively or efficiently."

The furlough days began in early July and were expected to last 11 weeks. The pentagon announced Tuesday they will be reduced to six weeks.

Barner said she is hopeful that they will end, but if they don't, she will continue to readjust and keep going.
