Head of Largest Federal Employee Union Calls for Review of Safety Procedures at All Federal Agencies

Shooting death of postal worker highlights danger facing federal employees

WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:

“Federal employees are on the front lines in delivering services to the American people, and oftentimes that puts them in harm’s way. The recent shooting death of U.S. Postal Service letter carrier Tyson Barnette is another tragic reminder that federal employees are literally putting their lives on the line each and every day they go to work.

“Barnette’s murder comes on the heels of the shooting rampage at Los Angeles International Airport that claimed the life of TSA Officer Gerardo Hernandez and injured several others, and the deaths earlier this year of two Bureau of Prisons correctional officers in separate incidents.

“In light of these incidents, every agency needs to review their operational procedures to ensure the safety and security of all federal employees.”
