The American Federation of Government Employees said Monday it will charter a new local for Transportation Security Administration workers in Minnesota on Dec. 16.
AFGE Local 899 will have approximately 260 members, or roughly 30 percent of the TSA workers in the state.
AFGE will represent those workers on an individual basis because TSA workers are not allowed to organize. But spokeswoman Jackie Traynere said the union expects the Obama administration to reverse that decision, and if so, the union would immediately file to hold organizing votes.
AFGE represents 600,000 government workers nationwide, including approximately 12,000 TSA workers. The union is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
