Nearly 85 Percent of TSOs Vote for Union

Inoneofthebiggestunionelectionsinrecentyears,nearly85percentofthetransportationsecurityofficers(TSOs)votedtojoinaunion.AFGEledthevotingandwillfacearunoffwithanotheruniontodeterminewhowillrepresentthe43,000TSOsat450ofthenation’sairports.

Theballotofferedthreechoices:AFGE,nounionorNTEU,anunaffiliatedunion.ThevotingbeganMarch9andendedApril19.Inordertowin,oneofthechoiceshadtogain50percentplusonevoteofalltheTSOsvoting.Nodatehasbeensetfortherunoff.
EventhoughtheTSOsdidnothavecollectivebargainingrights,morethan12,000TSOmembersarecurrentlyin40AFGElocalunionsacrossthecountry.Ittook10yearsbeforetheTSOsfinallygainedtherighttobargain.AtitsMarchmeeting,theAFL-CIOExecutiveCouncilapprovedastatementsupportingtheofficersrighttobargain,whichsaid,inpart:

Havingwontherighttobargaincollectively,TSA(TransportationSecurityAdministration)workersarenowpoisedtoelecttheirexclusiveunionrepresentative….WiththesupportofAFGE,whichhasworkedsopersistentlyandaggressivelyontheirbehalf,andwiththefullbackingandassistanceoftheAFL-CIO,theseworkerswillbesuccessful.

TheAFL-CIOalsoisaskingunionmemberstospeakwiththeTSOswheneveryou’reinanairportandurgetheworkersto“VoteYesforAFGE.”
