"The hard truth is that getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifice, and that sacrifice must be shared by employees of the federal government," Obama said in a statement to reporters.
Obama described federal employees "patriots who love their country."
"I'm asking civil servants to do what they've always done" for the nation, the New York Times reported the President of saying.
Obama did not discuss why military personnel, government contractors, postal workers, members of Congress, congressional staffers, and federal court judges and workers would be exempt from the freeze.
"Sticking it to a VA nurse and a Social Security worker is not the way to go," American Federation of Government Employees President John Gage said in an interview.
What are your thoughts on the pay freeze? Is it hypocritical for Obama to exempt members of Congress from pay freezes while forcing it on the 600,000 employees in the executive branch of government? Is this any way to win trust back from the American people? Or is it a necessary step that goes as far as it should? Share your thoughts with us below.
