Port Authority bolsters security measures at airports

NEWYORK-ThePortAuthorityBoardofCommissionersThursdayauthorizeda$28.4millionprojecttoexpandbollardprotectionatterminalfrontagesatNewarkLibertyInternationalandLaGuardiaairports,andannounceda$400milliongrantfromtheU.S.TransportationSecurityAdministrationforin-linebaggagescreeningimprovementsattheNewYorkmetropolitanregionairports.

“Theseprojectsreflectouroverridingcommitmenttothesafetyofourcustomersandmakingsecurityatourfacilitiesasseamlessandstrongaspossible,”ChairmanAnthonyCosciasaid.“Withmorethan$3billioninvestedinsecuritymeasuresinthelastdecade,we’vedemonstratedtimeandagainjusthowseriouslywetakethisimportantissue.”

“Thehardeningofterminalfrontagesandimplementationofin-linebaggagescreeningsystemsbuildonaseriesofsecurityenhancementswe’vealreadymadeatourairportstomaketheflyingexperiencesaferforourpassengers,”ExecutiveDirectorChristopherWardsaid.“WethanktheTSAforprovidingthisgrant,andforbeingastrongpartnerinallofoursecurityefforts.”

Lastyear,thePortAuthorityauthorizedthefirstphaseofthebollardsproject,whichisdesignedtostopvehiclesthatcouldpotentiallybeusedtotransportexplosivesinsideaterminalbuilding.This$28.4millionauthorization,whichincludes$3millioninplanningapprovedbytheBoardinJuly2007,isforNewark’sTerminalBandLaGuardia’sCentralTerminalBuilding-thetwopassengerterminalsdirectlyoperatedbytheagency.Theprojectispartofalargerplantohaveterminalbollardprotectionmeasuresinstalledatallterminalfacilitiesattheagency’sairports.ThePortAuthorityhasadvisedeachterminaloperatoroftheneedtoinstallsuchsystems,andisworkingwiththeoperatorsonthedesignoftheirsystems.

Thein-linescreeninginitiativewillallowthePortAuthorityanditsterminaloperatorstointegrateexplosives-detectionequipmentinbaggagebeltsystems,sothatpassengersnolongerwillhavetocarrytheirluggagefromcheck-incounterstoscreeninglocations.Themeasurewillhelpmakethetravelexperiencemorepleasantandlesstime-consumingbycreatingamoreefficientcheck-inprocess.
