Rehberg Measure Mandates TSA Screening for Montana’s Rural Airports

WASHINGTON,D.C.–Montana’sCongressman,DennyRehberg,thisweeksuccessfullyincludedlanguageintheHomelandSecurityAppropriationsbilldirectingtheTransportationSecurityAdministration(TSA)toquicklyimplementscreeningatMontana’ssevenEssentialAirService(EAS)airports.RehbergistheonlymemberoftheMontanadelegationontheAppropriationsCommittee.“Overthepastseveralmonths,I’vereceivedrepeatedassurancesfromTSAthat,assoonasMontana’sEASisupandrunning,federalscreeningwillbeinplace,”saidRehberg.“However,it’sessentialwetakeeverysteptoensuretheywillliveuptothiscommitment.Thislanguagereiteratesthatmessage.”

Rehberg’slanguagestatesthat“theCommitteeisawareofsevenairportsinMontanathatwerefederalizedinearly2008,afterthe2009budgetwassubmitted,whichcurrentlyhavenoscreenersinplacebuthavesubmittedapplicationstoparticipateintheScreeningPartnershipProgram.TheCommitteedirectsTSAtoacceptandapprovethoseapplicationsandquicklyimplementscreeningattheseairports.”

InanAprilmeetingwithMoMcGowan,TSAAssistantAdministratorattheOfficeofSecurityOperations,Rehbergrequestedandreceivedassurancesthat,ifprovideda30-daynoticeoftheresumptionofservice,TSAwouldhavesecurityscreeningcapabilitiesinplaceontime.

“TSAscreeningwillbeahugestepinimprovingthesafetyofthepassengersandtheairportemployees,”saidRehberg.“AndasIcontinuetoworkwiththeDepartmentofTransportationtogetMontana’sEASflightsoffthegroundagain,I’mgoingtomakeTSAholdupitsendofthebargain.”
