TSA to allow airport to use private screeners

ORLANDO,Fla.--TheTransportationSecurityAdministrationwillallowOrlandoSanfordInternationalAirporttooptoutofusingonlyfederalagentsforsecurityscreening.

TSAmadetheannouncementMonday,whichwillallowtheairporttogoforwardwithchangingtoprivatesecurityoperationsunderfederalsupervision.TheagencypreviouslydeniedSanford'sapplication.

Theairportisexpectedtoconsiderapairofnewscreeningmodels.Inone,aprivatescreeningservicesoperatoriscontractedbyTSA.InanothertheairportitselfwouldcompeteforthecontractwithTSAwhileretainingaprivatevendortoassist.InbothsituationsTSAwouldstillbeabletosetstandards,approvetheprivatecontractorsandprovideoversight.

Currently,only16ofthenation'sairportshaveoptedoutusingonlyTSAagents,thoughothersaresaidtobeinterested.
