Union, agency agree to tentative contract for airport screeners

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) says it has reached a first-ever labor contract covering federal transportation security officers.

If ratified, the contract, whose details were not immediately announced, would cover about 45,000 officers who screen passengers and baggage at the nation’s airports.

“The agreement will represent the culmination of a 10-year effort by AFGE, first to assist the employees in gaining the right to join a union and then to win a contract,” said a union statement.

Contract negotiations began in January with the Transportation Security Administration and concluded about 3 a.m. Thursday.
