Contract negotiations between the Transportation Security Administration and a union that represents its employees have hit a rough patch, most recently over the issue of how to adjudicate appeals of employee grievances and disputes, reported Government Executive.
According to the report, American Federation of Government Employees President John Gage on Dec. 20 expressed frustration with his prior day’s meeting with TSA Administrator John Pistole over the issue, and called on the agency head to allow an independent, third-party entity to review and resolve such appeals.
AFGE claims that the current process for handling the appeals is controlled by and biased toward TSA.
“TSA refuses to allow its employees the same due process rights afforded to other federal employees, including those at TSA’s head agency, the Department of Homeland Security,” Gage stated in a union press release.
“It did not go well,” Gage said of the Dec. 19 meeting. “After six months of repeated meetings, numerous phone calls and letters written, there is no progress.”
