Gerald Swanke is District 11 National Vice President of the American Federation of Government Employees, representing federal employees in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Guam, and Okinawa. Swanke was first elected the position in March 1998 and has since been re-elected to six more three-year terms.
Swanke first became a public servant at the Idaho National Guard in October 1982. He joined AFGE that same month. After serving the local as a steward, he was elected as chief steward and local president. A veteran of the Gulf War, Swanke served in the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves. He was hired by AFGE as a national representative in 1993.
Under Swanke’s leadership, District 11 has transformed into a leading district in political and legislative action. District 11’s membership has grown by more than 50 percent, and the district has tripled its contributions to AFGE’s Political Action Committee and Legislative Action Fund.
Swanke chairs AFGE’s Legislative and Political Action Committee for the National Executive Council. He also is a charter member of the National Labor Leadership Steering Committee, representing the AFL-CIO.
