We know this is a difficult time with many changes and adjustments in our daily lives –both at work and at home. A recent survey of union members reveals that federal employees who are caregivers are facing emotional and financial stress and lack support from agencies while trying to balance work and home responsibilities. Members reported that many of their employing agencies do not provide information on mental health resources.
To bridge the gap, we want to share some agency resources with you, as well as a self-paced module on Coping with Stress and Anxiety developed by the Field Services and Education Department.
Most agencies offer Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services. EAPs provide short-term counseling, support, and referral services to address the challenges of life. They are confidential and offered at no cost. Their services are available to civilian employees and household family members whenever they need--24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Longer term mental health benefits are available through your health care plan. Many plans under the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program are offering extended services during the pandemic. Check out your plan's website. If you don't have it, you can check on the Office of Personnel Management Plan Information page by selecting your state, which will bring up a chart of the plans available.
Many agencies use the Federal Occupational Health, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. Other agencies use Magellan Healthcare, or their own in-house providers.
