(Fayetteville, N.C.)—Following several weeks of membership building, professional employees at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C., chose the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) in an election where not one of the employees voted against union representation.
The election, held September 17, covers a unit of approximately 90 employees, ranging from doctors, to pharmacists, to dentists and optometrists. The final election tally was 46 for AFGE, 0 for No Union.
The new bargaining unit will become part of AFGE Local 1738. Some 35 employees have already signed membership forms (1187s) to join the union.
This makes the third “slam-dunk” for Local 1738. Two previous election wins for a unit of cemetery workers and a group of regional office employees also netted zero votes for “No Union.”
“Our Local’s recent election victories clearly demonstrate that DVA employees are eager for union representation and want to be part of a growing and dynamic union,” said David Cox, President of Local 1738. Cox lives by his motto—“Organize, organize, organize!”
The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, represents some 600,000 government employees in the United States and overseas. AFGE Local 1738 is 74 percent organized with 1,400 union members out of a bargaining unit of 1,900 DVA employees. Nationwide, AFGE represents some 140,000 employees working for the DVA.
