WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Government Employees today announced its endorsement of Sean Casten for the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.
“Sean Casten is a respected scientist and business leader who applies a facts-first approach to decision making, ensuring he is informed by expert input and on-the-ground reality. As Illinois’ next member of Congress, Sean Casten will fight for public-sector workers and for all working families.
“Sean Casten understands that cutting the number of federal employees through hiring freezes and arbitrary caps hurts taxpayers and citizens by limiting the government’s ability to produce high quality and cost-effective work.
“Sean Casten will fight to protect federal employees’ benefits and improve employee retention, because he believes that cutting the benefits that workers were promised is unfair. He will also work to protect the right of all Americans to have affordable and accessible health care.”
Nearly 80,000 federal employees live in Illinois – supporting the military, caring for veterans, ensuring the safety of the flying public, and getting Social Security recipients their benefits accurately and on time. There are nearly 84,000 current and retired federal workers in the 6th Congressional District.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union in the country, representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government workers in all functions of government. District 7 has nearly 20,000 dues-paying members in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
