(Las Vegas, Nev.)—Federal employees working for the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) at the Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev., chose the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) as their union in an election held Feb. 20, 2003.
The new bargaining unit is comprised of some 160 professional employees, including doctors, registered nurses, psychologists, social workers and more. The final vote tally was: 51 AFGE, 19 No Union.
These employees will be represented by AFGE Local 2297, which already represents non-professional DVA employees in the area.
A key factor in the election win was the strong organizing committee of doctors, who worked hard to obtain the right to bargain with DVA.
“It is critical for federal employees to have a voice on the job to ensure that critical services to the American people are provided in the most effective and efficient manner,” stated AFGE National President Bobby L. Harnage, Sr. “These employees understand the importance of union representation to guarantee that their voices will be heard.”
The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, represents some 600,000 government employees in the United States and overseas. Nationwide, AFGE represents some 145,000 employees working for the Department of Veterans Affairs. For more information about AFGE, log onto www.afge.org.
