(WASHINGTON, D.C.)— The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) applauds John Kerry for carrying the theme of national unity on the campaign trail. His decision to address the 2004 Unity Journalists Conference, attended by journalists of color from across our nation, demonstrates a deep appreciation for our diverse American society.
A Kerry Presidency will seek to improve the lives of all Americans, including those in racial and ethnic minority communities, by strengthening the middle class, promoting economic growth, and instituting a sensible and fair tax policy. Kerry will provide funding for veterans' care that will guarantee we meet the needs of both those who served years ago and those who have yet to return home and he will ensure the resources that will enable us to secure our homeland.
It is clear that John Kerry places high value upon the American ideals of inclusion and opportunity. He will not play upon the fears of the populace, but will instead work to heal many of the great divisions that have so threatened our society from within.
The American Federation of Government Employees is the largest federal employee union, representing 600,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia. AFGE represents federal workers in a broad spectrum of agencies including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, Bureau of Prisons, Department of Agriculture, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
