America can’t withstand another government shutdown, AFGE president says
WASHINGTON - American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:
“I am calling on every member of Congress in the House and Senate to support federal employees by keeping the government open.
“For 35 days, 800,000 federal employees were locked out of their jobs or forced to work without pay through no fault of their own. Many employees still haven’t been fully compensated – more than two weeks after the shutdown ended.
“Federal agencies are still recovering from the longest shutdown in our nation’s history, and the country will never completely recover from the economic hit this deliberate lockout inflicted. During the shutdown, small business owners couldn’t get loans approved, local farmers were left waiting for payments they rely on to survive, at-risk families faced being evicted from public housing, and so much more.
“The mere suggestion of ever again having to go through another shutdown is cruel. Congress must come together and pass a long-term FY 2019 funding bill that keeps the government open and prevents another shutdown.”
