WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals President Shane Fausey today issued the following statement in recognition of National Correctional Officers Week:
“Correctional officers put their lives on the line every day they come to work – no more so than now, when they face the added danger of the coronavirus that is spreading through our federal prisons.
“Since 1984, the first week of May has been designated National Correctional Officers Week. It’s a time to recognize the men and women who work in difficult and often dangerous conditions to ensure the safety of prison inmates and surrounding communities.
“As president of the union council representing more than 30,000 federal correctional officers nationwide, I commend all officers and staff for their commitment and dedication to the job and their service to America.
“As we recognize the dangerous commitment that all correctional professionals have to their co-workers and communities, we must pause and remember those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their co-workers and country.”
