Nearly seven years, on June 20, 2008, we lost our brother José Rivera.
José was brutally murdered by Joseph Cabrera Sablan and James Leon Guerreo. They attacked Officer Rivera, pinned him down, and stabbed him repeatedly with a homemade weapon. Cabrera Sablan and Guerreo clearly developed a plan to murder José Rivera, and now a reported plea arrangement has been made to take the death penalty off the table for Cabrera Sablan.
Joseph Cabrera Sablan is a menace to society and a danger to every officer tasked with guarding him. In 1988 Cabrera Sablan murdered his girlfriend with a machete and attempted to murder a 14 year old girl. He has exhibited a clear pattern of behavior and a clear history as a murderer.
We cannot -- and will not -- sit on our hands and let this dangerous inmate be given a second consecutive life sentence. He clearly does not consider life in prison a punishment; we have a responsibility to make sure the lives of correctional workers everywhere are protected.
In the section below, write a letter to the Judge who will oversee the plea deal that could give Cabrera Sablan a reprieve. AFGE will collect and print the letters to deliver to the Court House in advance of Cabrera Sablan’s plea and sentencing. AFGE will also use them at a national press conference about this injustice in Washington, D.C.
