During the annual meeting of the AFGE Defense Conference (DEFCON), Army Caucus Chair Ozia Scott was selected to a three-year term as chair of the DEFCON Steering Group.
Navy Caucus Chair Denise Nemeth-Greenleaf was reelected as vice chair during the meeting, which was held in February in conjunction with the AFGE Legislative Conference in Washington.
“I would like to thank DEFCON for the honor of serving our members and AFGE,” Scott said. “I am also grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside Denise Nemeth-Greenleaf as we take on our new roles as chair and co-chair. Looking ahead, I am eager to work hard for our members, with a primary focus on advancing our organizing efforts and legislative agenda.”
AFGE DEFCON is an advisory body to the AFGE National President that’s designed to provide a central point of communication among AFGE units serving Department of Defense civilian workers. Elected leaders from councils and committees representing DoD workers at the agency or service level voluntarily serve on the DEFCON Steering Group, where they work to increase AFGE’s political, legislative, and membership strength and provide critical insight and input into important issues affecting front-line workers.
Among other changes made during the annual meeting, a Space Force Caucus was created to serve the interests of civilian employees at the U.S. Space Force. Aaron Herweg from AFGE Local 2263 was selected to serve as chair of the caucus, while Thaddeus Wallace from AFGE Local 1897 is vice chair. The new caucus replaces the Space Force Committee that DEFCON initially formed last year.
Two new leaders were selected to head the National Guard Caucus, also known as the Title 32 Caucus: Jeanette McElhaney from Local 987 was selected chair, while Ozia Scott from Local 54 will serve as vice chair.
In addition, new vice chairs were elected for eight other caucuses:
- Air Force: Christine Lauer, Local 1199
- Air Force Materiel Command: Steven Allen, Local 2221
- Defense Commissary Agency: Randy Ruple, Local 1858
- Defense Health Agency: Michelle Nicks, Local 1502
- Depot and Arsenal: Ben Powell, Local 2185
- Navy: Joseph Marchica, Local 23
- Navy Region Southeast: Brandon Robertson, Local 1960
- Non-Appropriated Fund: Brenda Williams, Local 916
