The Grovetown City Council in Georgia has a new council woman, and that’s Ceretta Smith – AFGE’s very own District 5 fair practices coordinator and former president of AFGE Local 2017!
Voters elected Ceretta in a special election on March 16 to fill the position left vacant by the late council member Allen Transou. She received 73.5% of the votes, beating candidate Marsha Keathing, who received 26.34%.
As union members, we are proud to have played a role in helping elect a pro-worker candidate to the Grovetown City Council. Our union even made a grant from its Legislative Education Action Fund (LEAF) funds to the Augusta/East Georgia Labor Council, AFL-CIO, to fund their member to member issue outreach, mobilization, and education efforts.
AFGE National emailed and texted members in the voting precincts twice to get out the vote for Ceretta. AFGE National and Local 2017 also mailed to members in the voting precinct to remind people to vote for Ceretta.
Ceretta is an active member of AFGE Local 2017 and an Army veteran. She has been a Grovetown resident for more than 15 years. Congratulations, Ceretta!
