AFGE Member Honored As Hometown Hero

AFGE Veterans Affairs Local 1862 President Andrew Scherzinger has been recognized as a hometown hero in Central Pennsylvania. Scherzinger is a decorated veteran, having served in the United States Armed Forces between 2000 and 2004.

Scherzinger served as a military police officer and while working as a convoy commander in Baghdad, his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb. He suffered multiple injuries and was medically retired from the military, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Scherzinger is one of the many veterans who have found employment with the federal government after their military service. In fact, one-in-four Veterans Affairs employees served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

As president of Local 1862, Scherzinger represents nearly 630 employees at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona, Pa. Watch the video below to learn more about Scherzinger and his service to our nation and our nation’s heroes.
