Our union, AFGE, is continuing our upward trajectory and showing the power and benefit of union membership. In short, AFGE is rising!
With a surge of 1,747 new members joining in May 2023, we are proudly witnessing our best May numbers in nearly a decade and our best month overall in 8 years.
The new influx of members last month marks our eighth consecutive month of growth.
AFGE leaders and activists are exhilarated by this momentum. It shows the fruits of our members’ dedicated efforts in organizing and promoting the benefits of union membership.
AFGE National President Everett Kelley lauded the achievement.
"May's impressive numbers are a testament to the tenacity of our members and the undeniable value of union solidarity. This growth was not by chance; it's the collective result of ongoing organizing efforts, unyielding dedication, and the spirit of unity among government employees," he said.
The surge in new membership is a direct result of AFGE's robust organizing strategies, which include New Employee Orientations to acquaint fresh hires with union values and benefits, focused one-on-one conversations about the impact of union membership, and capitalizing on favorable governmental policies implemented by President Biden after the previous administration spent years trying to destroy federal sector unions like AFGE.
As we head into the summer months, traditionally a strong period for organizing, AFGE is poised to maintain this growth momentum, showcasing the resilience and strength of the largest union of employees in the federal and D.C. governments.
"Each new member bolsters our strength, amplifies our voice, and helps us deliver on our union’s commitment to advocating for worker rights. Let's carry this momentum forward and keep rising together," President Kelley concluded, setting a rallying tone for the months ahead.
