D.C. and federal government workers across the country are joining AFGE in droves, eager for the chance to be a part of our movement for better pay, stronger benefits, a respectable retirement, and dignity, fairness, and respect on the job.
These new members are powering some of the best growth we’ve seen since 2015. In October of 2022, AFGE added the most new members of any October in 5 years and had the most net growth – a gain of 677 members – since 2015.
This growth isn’t happening by accident, it’s part of a sustained and sustainable organizing push happening across the federation.
AFGE leaders at the local, council, district, and national level came into 2022 focused on organizing new members, growing our union, building power, and winning improvements for the government workers we represent. The results of this total team endeavor have been nothing short of incredible.
“We are showing what’s possible when unions commit to an organization-wide organizing effort,” said AFGE Membership and Organization Director David Cann, “Folks are out there doing exciting stuff at every level of the union, and the results are in the numbers.”
“We have beaten our goal of organizing 3,500 new members per month every month this year except for January – and most months, we’ve been closer to 4,500 new members per month,” continued Cann. “Sometimes, we’ve even surpassed 5,000 new members. This is AFGE’s new normal, and it’s something for all of us to get excited about.”
