July 4 recognizes the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which affirmed that everyone is created equal and has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” While true equality for many of our citizens remains frustratingly out of reach, we have made much progress toward that goal in the past 238 years and the future looks bright.
This is also an opportune time to thank you for the work you do each and every day. Because of our federal and D.C. government employees, Americans will celebrate this holiday by visiting national parks and monuments that are maintained and protected, by traveling on airplanes and trains that are secure, and by sharing in food that is safe for consumption.
I hope you enjoy a safe and happy holiday.
