NOTE: Because of the higher than usual number of primary candidates remaining, AFGE’s National Executive Council has chosen to extend the endorsement policy’s timelines in order to allow additional time for the candidate field to narrow. Conducting a costly, scientific national poll of AFGE’s membership before the field has narrowed is unlikely to yield a conclusive or useful result, and would require one or more additional polls in the future at a dramatically increased cost to AFGE’s members. The NEC will continue to evaluate the state of the race and move forward with the endorsement process at a more appropriate time and in a way that ensures the efficient use of AFGE funds.
On November 3, our fellow Americans will head to the polls to vote for the next President of the United States. As federal and D.C. government employees, we’re electing more than just a President; we’re electing the leader of the executive branch. As the last two and a half years have clearly shown, the President has tremendous leeway over our working conditions and union rights. Who we choose in that voting booth will have tremendous implications for our pay, benefits, and rights on the job, and we are stronger when we make that decision as one union.
In our continuing efforts to always do better, in 2017 we tasked the AFGE Committee for the Future with developing a more transparent and inclusive process for future endorsements. Over the course of several months, the committee of NVPs, Council, and Local leaders researched and debated vigorously what that process should look like going forward. The result of their hard work was a detailed process including more leadership outreach, teletown halls, professional/direct-to-member polling, and broader consensus-building across AFGE. In April 2019, the National Executive Council adopted that new endorsement process by ballot. AFGE will outline that process in more detail as the campaign season unfolds, but you can take a look at the policy on our website here.
The all-important first step of this process is getting to know the candidates better. There are over two dozen individuals who’ve thrown their hats in the race, so there’s certainly a lot to learn. To get our hands around where each stands on our issues, we will send all announced presidential candidates – regardless of party – a copy of our official AFGE Presidential Questionnaire. This questionnaire is not only helpful for better understanding the candidates; it’s also a great tool for educating the next leader of the free world about who we are, what we stand for, and what we expect from them.
