AFGE Supports Bill to Provide Death Benefits for TSA Officers Killed on the Job

Like police officers, state troopers and firefighters, Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) regularly put their lives on the line to protect the security of others. Last November the first TSO was killed in the line of duty at Los Angeles International Airport. But unlike police officers, state troopers and firefighters, current laws do not provide the same death benefits that other federal law enforcement officers receive for TSA officers’ families.

Former AFGE National Vice President for District 8 Has Passed Away

Virgil Miller, former National Vice President of AFGE’s 8th District, passed away yesterday. Virgil was born on February 23, 1925; he was 89 years old. Virgil was elected National Vice President in 1969 after serving as President of Air Force Local 1997. Virgil retired from AFGE in May 1990. He was highly regarded and had won respect by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Hire Government Employees to Close Gender Pay Gap

April 08, 2014

April 8 is Equal Pay Day, the day that marks the day when women catch up to their male counterparts’ pay from the previous year. Even though the pay gap between men and women has decreased since 1963 when women earned only 59 cents to every dollar earned by men, prompting the passage of the Equal Pay Act, women’s pay continue to lag behind today. In the private sector, the pay gap is close to 20 cents and wider among African American and Latina women.

Closing the Gap: Fighting for Equal Pay

The Equal Pay Act was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Back then, women earned only 59 cents to every dollar earned by men. Although the gap has significantly decreased over the last 50 years, women continue to lag behind, still earning only 81 cents to every dollar a man earns. The gap widens for African American and Latina women.
