Under the leadership of the National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices, the Women's and Fair Practices Departments are devoted to promoting the civil, human, women's and workers' rights of federal and D.C. government workers. The departments support and implement the priorities of AFGE in four program areas that include: education and training, member mobilization/organizing, representation through litigation and legislative/political action.
The Women’s and Fair Practices Departments focus on strengthening the education and training component of our program, highlighting the importance of the Coordinator structure and the EEO process. We share our EEO training with Districts, Councils and Locals throughout the year. Our departments are also proud to hold the Human Rights Training Conference every year besides convention year. The Human Rights Training Conference is one of AFGE’s largest training conferences where the focus is on civil, human, women and workers’ rights.
The Women's and Fair Practices Departments support a broad spectrum of issues of priority to today's working families such as Family/medical leave, nursing mothers, sexual harassment, domestic violence, young worker engagement, LGBT rights, and voter protection.
The Women’s and Fair Practices Departments respond to thousands of telephone and e-mail inquiries from Local presidents, coordinators, stewards and complainants regarding the EEO complaint process, anti-discrimination laws and overall workplace concerns. In protecting government workers from discrimination, the departments not only work on individual cases, but also write policy recommendations and work on issues of importance to AFGE members. The Fair Practices Department has accepted many cases for direct representation from across the nation that meets our criteria.
The Women’s and Fair Practices Departments support the legislative and political priorities of AFGE and additionally have always made voter protection a priority. Other key legislative issues of priority are voter ID, non-discrimination, paid parental leave, equal pay and any other laws dealing with equality and fair treatment for all people.
