AFGE Praises Senate Budget Committee Passage of Pay Parity Resolution
(Washington, D.C.)—“Actions speak louder than words and President Bush’s paltry pay proposals speak volumes,” stated AFGE National President Bobby L. Harnage, following the Senate Budget Committee’s passage of pay parity language to ensure that federal workers receive the same pay raise as military personnel in 2004.
“President Bush’s constant attacks on government employees—including his push to privatize 850,000 federal jobs, deny federal workers their constitutional right to join a union, and his repeated disregard for the long-established tradition of pay parity—prove this Administration has no regard for its federal workforce,” Harnage said, “despite his occasional pep talks.”
“Federal employees are all too familiar with terrorist threats—as citizens of our great nation, as targets of government attacks and as the frontline guardians of our homeland,” Harnage added. “Yet Bush continues to disregard the long-established tradition of pay parity between military personnel and federal workers.”
“During this unprecedented time in our nation’s history, both federal employees and military personnel are fighting the war against terrorism and making remarkable contributions to the safety of the United States and its citizens,” Harnage said. “The contributions of both should be recognized by providing them with equal pay increases.”
“On behalf of the 600,000 government employees represented by AFGE, I want to thank Senators Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), John Warner
(R-Va.) and George Allen (R-Va.) for their bipartisan support for pay parity,” Harnage concluded.
