Washington Area Community Groups Come Together To Save Government Services and 110,000 Jobs
(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Government privatization wastes tax dollars, jeopardizes the livelihoods of government workers and disproportionately affects women, minorities and veterans. White House privatization plans will cost D.C., Maryland and Virginia over 110,000 jobs. That’s why AFGE and a number of Greater D.C. environmental, civil rights and labor groups have come together to speak out against privatization.
Several influential organizations within Greater D.C. have called a press conference to challenge the White House, Congress, and D.C. government to put an end to privatization plans. The press conference will take place on:
Speakers from AFGE, NAACP, AFSCME, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE), the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE), and the National Park Conservation Association (NPCA) will highlight at the press conference how privatization is:
1) Wasting tax dollars; 2) hurting the environment and communities; 3) eliminating well-paying jobs; 4) targeting women, minorities and veterans; and 5) jeopardizing homeland security.
The press conference will serve to educate and inform Greater D.C. residents that privatization plans will affect more than 35,000 workers in D.C., 25,000 in Maryland, and over 50,000 in Virginia—over 110,000 in the area.
Many jobs will go to private companies that have a history of paying less in wages and benefits, and gouging taxpayers. Just two months ago, taxpayers were taken for $31.8 million when a Department of Defense contract scandal was uncovered. In the process, taxpayers lost their shirts and government employees lost their jobs.
