AFGE to Hold Federal Police Officer Rally
(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) will hold a rally during Police Officers Memorial Week in support of the Law Enforcement Officers Equity Act (H.R. 1841) on:
Members of the AFGE Police Officers Steering Committee will hold the rally with Representative Bob Filner (D-Calif.) and other law enforcement unions and organizations to promote H.R. 1841. Introduced in May of 2001, the bill has over 170 co-sponsors.
H.R. 1841 would grant “law enforcement officer” status to Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) inspectors and to Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) and Department of Defense and Federal Protective Service police officers, among others. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Government Reform
The AFGE-backed bill would reclassify as “law enforcement officers” all federal employees who are authorized to carry firearms and are responsible for the investigation or apprehension of suspected or convicted criminals.
Like other officers with law enforcement officer’s status who can currently retire after 20 years of federal service, H.R. 1841 would extend the 20-year retirement option to those reclassified as “law enforcement officers.”
