AFGE Introduces Its FEPCA Calculator
(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Ever wonder what your friend, neighbor or family member working for the federal government would be making if the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act (FEPCA) of 1990 had been fully implemented. Wonder no more!
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), today introduces its FEPCA Calculator as part of the union's newly designed web site. The FEPCA Calculator, located on AFGE's home page—www.afge.org—allows federal employees to enter their geographic location, grade and step to determine what their annual salary would be if the 1990 law had been fully implemented.
The results, in many instances, are staggering. For example, a GS-10, Step 1, federal employee living in the Washington, D.C. area currently makes $40,367 annually. If FEPCA had been fully implemented that same employee would be making $45,458 per year—a difference of $5,091 or 13 percent. A GS-10, Step 1, living in Portland would see an increase of $5,614 or 14 percent. And in Texas, a GS-10, Step 1, living in Houston, would see a whopping increase of 18 percent or $7,848 per year.
The FEPCA Calculator "results page" also provides a sample letter which can be used by federal employees to urge their lawmakers to support full implementation of FEPCA and close the pay gap between comparable jobs in the federal and private sectors.
"One big reason for the federal Human Capital Crisis is obvious each time anyone uses AFGE's FEPCA Calculator," said the union’s National President Bobby L. Harnage. "If the government is serious about recruitment and retention, Congress should start right here," he noted.
Also new to AFGE's Web site are improved navigation, a site search feature, site map, "printable pages" and easier login procedures for AFGE members.
"Government employees need to be able to grab hold of the best information possible for the battle we're waging to keep our government strong," explained Harnage. "AFGE is the federal employee fighting force—in cyberspace and on the Hill—leading the way."
