D.C. Government and Federal Workers Union Endorses Linda Cropp for D.C. Mayor
(Washington)—The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) today endorsed D.C. Council Chair Linda Cropp to become the next mayor of the District of Columbia.
“While all the candidates for mayor are sincere in their concern for the city and have expressed intriguing solutions for what ails the district, we feel Linda Cropp is the candidate best suited to lead a city that will treat its workers fairly, support affordable housing efforts and give our youth a true chance at success through quality education,” said AFGE District 14 National Vice President Dwight Bowman, the district that represents D.C. government workers.
Cropp was selected after a multi-stage process that required the candidates to fill out detailed questionnaires and sit for interviews with the executive board of the Metro Washington AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, of which AFGE is a member. The executive board voted to endorse Cropp after she received more than two-thirds of the council’s vote. The council’s delegates later ratified the executive board’s vote without objection.
In addition to Cropp, AFGE also supports Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray’s bid to become chair of the D.C. City Council.
“While Gray’s opponent, Councilmember Kathy Patterson, has always been a friend of labor, we were impressed with Gray’s initiative and innovation in his approach to representing the residents in his ward,” said Bowman. “Gray has a great reputation in Ward 7, and we are confident that he will do an excellent job leading the city council.”
AFGE also announced endorsements in the following races: Delegate to the House of Representatives (At Large): Eleanor Holmes Norton; Shadow Senator: Phillip Pannell; Ward 1 Councilmember: Jim Graham; Ward 3 Councilmember: Paul Strauss; Ward 5 Councilmember: Harry Thomas Jr.; Ward 6 Councilmember: Tommy Wells; At Large Councilmember: Phil Mendelson.
